“The end result was so beautiful, more than I could have ever imagined!” – Kate Masterson.

When I first met Kate at a café in Melbourne to discuss designing her bridal headpiece, I was so thrilled to see how excited she was about her big day. Over coffee, we talked through the details of the wedding, and it was very clear that Kate had put a lot of time and effort into the plans. She had some creative ideas to make her wedding truly personal, and this combined with her calm manner meant it was a real pleasure to work with her on the design process.

Kate showed me some examples from the internet and said,  “I’d like something similar to this, but these all feel so machine made and mass produced. I really want something special, handmade and unique.” She was keen to use the oak leaf to acknowledge her Irish Celtic heritage, so I began my design using this.  The oak leaf represents strength, power and wisdom and has a deep history within Celtic traditions.

Whilst making carved wax trials of the piece, I thought about how I could make something in sterling silver that would be light enough to wear comfortably in her hair on her wedding day. Forming the shapes in wax first, I then cast them in 100% reclaimed sterling silver. Each leaf was soldered onto a branch, before I made the comb from sterling silver to secure the piece in Kate’s hair. I finished the headpiece in a brushed matt finish and polished the edges of the leaves to give them a special glimmer.

It was such a pleasure to create this piece for Kate. Wishing you a fabulous day – you look gorgeous!
